My name is Paige Barnard, and I am the owner and operator of Paige's Day Home.
I have had the Day Home open for just over 3 years, and for the first 3 years, I was licensed by the Governement of Alberta. I went private for a short while but I am back to being regulated threw the Calgary And Area Day Home Agency. I can once again do government subsidy. I am also currently the Assisstant Playschool Teacher in Stavely on Monday and Wednesday mornings.
Here, at Paige's Day Home it is all about the health, safety and happiness of your child. I have my Childcare staff certification level 1, and I am currently doing my Early Childhood Education Certificate, online through Bow Valley College. Once, I have my certificate, I will qualify for my level 2. I also have my childcare first aid course.
In the past 3 years, I have had infants from 8 months old to children 7 years old, the majority of children here are between the ages of 1 year to 5 years. Due, to the busing in town, I am unable to pick kids up from school, however, if parents make arrangements for the children to be dropped off after school, school age children are more than welcome.
At the Day Home we do crafts, circle time, story time, play in the large fenced backyard, and we also have free play; where the children are able to just play and have fun in the play room. We attend the Stay N Play groups, offered around town and go to story time at the local library. We go to the numerous parks, around town as a different outside play area, and go for walks to explore the neighborhood. In the summer time, we spend a lot of time at the town water park and attend picnics hosted by the Parent Link Centre. In the past we have gone to the Calgary Zoo, the Parent Link Center in High River, the Claresholm Museum, and the Fire hall. When there are only 1 or 2 kids present for the day, we have even gone to the local pool.
Alot of our crafts, activities and play time are educational. I work very hard to teach the children the things they will need for when they go into kindergarten or playschool, or even just the little things they need to learn for everyday life. We practice our Alphabet, counting, writing our names, colors and shapes. For the younger children I work on things like walking, going up and down stairs and learn to play with other kids. For example one afternoon I spent 20mins. with one child working on tying bows, so she could tie the strings on a dress up clothing all be herself. Or a another child I practiced and worked with her all summer on writting her name; so she would be ready for school in September. Crafts and activities I also try hard to set up themes and go with a theme for a week or 2. So we would do winter for a week or 2 then move into Cristmas. The children really enjoy having there crafts co-inside with what is going on in there everyday life.
All the meals are provided, we eat healthy snacks and lunch that go along with the Canadian Food Guide. Before, I became a day home provider I was a cook, I even went to cooking school. On special occasions we will have cake and a party, special occasions are birthdays, Halloween parties and Valentine's Day for example. An example menu for the day would be morning snack of bananas and granola bars, lunch would be spaghetti with meat sauce and milk, afternoon snack would be cheese and crackers. During, the day the kids tend to get watered down juice (100%juice) or water and they get milk at lunch time.
And here unlike other day homes, the children are not confined to one little room, here they have a lot of space to play in. They have access to the majority of the house.
The children also get a fun little fluff ball of a dog to play with. His name is Bandit and he is a 2 year old Bichon Shitzu and I also have a long haired Guine Pig named Gizmo. The children enjoy interacting with both of them.
